The Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide was established to look into the high rates of suicide in the Australian Defence and veteran community and make recommendations to the Australian Government.

What does the DVSC do?

The Defence and Veterans' Service Commission provides independent oversight and evidence-based advice to Government, to drive system reform to improve suicide prevention and wellbeing outcomes for current and ex-serving ADF members.

 

The work of the DVSC is founded on the significant insights, findings and recommendations of the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide. Our job is to drive long-term accountability for the systemic reforms envisioned by the Royal Commission to protect the lives of those who protect Australia, now and for future generations.

Understanding wellbeing for current and ex-serving ADF personnel

Wellbeing is not just the absence of illness. It is a complex combination of a person's physical, mental, emotional and social health factors.

The risk factors for suicide and suicidality among serving and ex-serving ADF personnel exist across many domains and how they relate to each other can be complex.

The National Mental Health Commission's Strategy aims to unify the efforts of governments, communities and service providers to improve suicide prevention outcomes in Australia.

The Defence and Veterans' Service Commission will work closely with the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, and other agencies, to understand and learn from current and emerging data and trends.
